California Secretary of State Debate
The race for secretary of state lost a candidate but gained renewed attention last month when Sen. Leland Yee withdrew after being charged in a criminal conspiracy. On April 23 we hosted a debate among the top contenders in a crowded field vying for the job of overseeing the state’s elections and several business programs. They discussed ideas to improve transparency and update the antiquated campaign finance and lobbying databases and a variety of other related topics. Photos from the event below. Taking part in the debate were:
Derek Cressman, a Democrat and former leader at Common Cause.
Alex Padilla, a Democratic senator from the San Fernando Valley.
Pete Peterson, a Republican from Santa Monica and executive director of the Davenport Institute at Pepperdine University.
Dan Schnur, a former Republican who is running as an independent, is director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC.
