  • Sacramento Mayor-Elect Darrell Steinberg

Darrell Steinberg will be sworn in as the mayor of Sacramento Dec. 13 while the city celebrates major milestones and struggles with ongoing problems. The Golden 1 Center is open for business and may be delivering so far on its promise of entertainment and economic activity downtown. The farm-to-fork movement continues to build, and development in the railyards is finally picking up the pace. But the mood of the Sacramento electorate isn’t all positive. Voters rejected two local ballot measures on Nov. 8 that Steinberg backed: a sales tax increase to fund transportation projects and a parcel tax to pay for school services. At the same time, voters approved a measure to have an independent commission draw district boundaries for city council elections. Sacramento leaders continues to grapple with a significant homeless population as they try to finance expansion and renovations at the convention center and Community Center Theater, among other challenges. What does Steinberg see as his mandate, and how will he apply his experience and skills from his time in the Legislature to governing Sacramento? Join the Sacramento Press Club Dec. 7 as we welcome former California Senate President Pro Tempore and current Sacramento Mayor-Elect Darrell Steinberg as our luncheon speaker.

  • Post-Election Breakdown with Mark & Mark

It’s a Sacramento Press Club tradition and the hottest ticket in town: The Sacramento Press Club welcomed Mark DiCamillo of the Field Poll and Mark Baldassare of the Public Policy Institute of California as they discussed one of the most fascinating elections in recent memory. In addition to the much-discussed presidential race, California voters were weighing a massive slate of hot-button ballot initiatives and competitive congressional and legislative races. Mark and Mark discussed what factors were in play in California this November, whether the presidential race played any role in California’s contested down-ticket races, and how the pollsters did at predicting the eventual outcome.

  • Vivek Ranadivé, Sacramento Kings owner & chairman

Vivek Ranadivé is a technology entrepreneur who pioneered the use of real-time messaging software and created TIBCO, a multibillion dollar software company. His software helped digitize Wall Street and became the central nervous system for most of the world’s largest companies and government agencies. He is known as “Mr. Real Time” – his belief that by getting the right information to the right place at the right time, you can make the world a better place. He was inspired to leave his native India at 16 for Cambridge, Mass., where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and later an MBA at Harvard.

But you may know him better as the owner and chairman of the Sacramento Kings. His love of basketball began when he coached his daughter’s middle school team, a success that was the inspiration for Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling book “David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants.” In 2013, he became the first Indian majority owner of an NBA team when he purchased the Sacramento Kings, securing their future in California’s capital city. Under Ranadivé’s leadership, the Kings are investing $1 billion in the downtown area and aiming to build “next great American city.”

The Sacramento Press Club welcomed Ranadivé just days before the official opening of the new Golden 1 Center, which was billed as the world’s smartest arena, powered 100 percent by solar energy and hopefully the key to a winning future on the court, too.
