• Non-Members- Marshall Tuck- Candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction- September 25th

Marshall Tuck, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Candidate, is our guest speaker for the September 25th luncheon.

This year's race for superintendent of public instruction is drawing more attention than the race has seen in years. Marshall Tuck, a Democrat and former head of the Green Dot charter school system, is challenging Democratic incumbent Tom Torlakson, who has the backing of the state's powerful teachers unions. The nonpartisan race has attracted outsize spending and attention, particularly after a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled that California's teacher tenure laws are "a broken system."

School reformers have unified around the so-called Vergara decision, but the state's top elected Democrats oppose it. Torlakson supported Attorney General Kamala Harris' decision to appeal, while Tuck and other reformers hope to force a conversation on inequality in California’s schools, even in the wake of voter-approved tax increases for education.

After winning endorsements from every major newspaper, Tuck forced a November showdown following the June primary election. In addition to his role at the unionized Green Dot schools, Tuck most recently served as founding CEO for the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's effort with the Los Angeles Unified School District to turn around 17 struggling schools.

Before devoting his career to education, Tuck was an executive at Model N, a successful enterprise software company based in the Bay Area. Before that, he worked in finance, and spent a year teaching and doing service work internationally, primarily in Zimbabwe and Thailand.

Please join the Sacramento Press Club on Sept. 25 for a conversation about the future of California's schools with candidate Marshall Tuck.
